Lifted
A man waits for the elevator in an office building. Hugo, in his mid-thirties, looks older than his age due to his outdated glasses and old-fashioned attire. Despite the forecast calling for a low chance of rain, Hugo is dressed in a raincoat and hat, carrying an umbrella. This day, like any other, follows the unvarying routine of Hugo's safe and uneventful life.
The elevator bell rings, and the doors open. As a passenger exits, Hugo steps in. The doors close and he notices the other occupant in the cabin: a beautiful, well dressed young woman. Claire works in this office building as well and is nervously looking at her watch because she is late for a meeting. Hugo has never seen her before, but he is too shy and awkward to introduce himself.
The elevator reaches Claire's floor, and their eyes meet briefly before she steps out. In her hurry, one of her butterfly earrings falls off and bounces on the floor. Hugo immediately picks it up, but before he can hand it back to her, the doors close and the elevator begins to ascend. Eager to reunite the earring with its rightful owner, Hugo repeatedly presses the "Down" button, but it has no effect. Unable to reverse the elevator's relentless climb, he reaches for the "Emergency Stop" button, and the car abruptly comes to a halt.
Hugo takes a moment to recompose and figure out his next move. As the "Door Open" button is unresponsive, he forcibly pries open the doors and realizes that the lift is stuck between two floors. He looks down and sees light below, so he decides to climb down a cable. In his sheltered existence, Hugo has never experienced such trepidation. Filled with a sense of adventure, he summons his courage and cautiously begins to slide down, holding on for dear life. In a comedic moment, he struggles to keep a grip on his umbrella while also adjusting his hat.
As Hugo descends faster and faster, he transitions from the dark shaft to the lit area. When he reaches the end of the cable, he lands... on the deck of a ship! Stupefied, he looks up and sees that the elevator is gone, replaced by a tall mast with the long rope he was sliding along. Wonderstruck, Hugo appears to have entered a strange alternate reality where he is alone on an old sailing ship in the middle of the ocean. Suddenly, menacing clouds gather, the sky darkens, and it starts to rain. Our stranded hero opens his umbrella, grateful that he had the foresight to bring it with him after all. The wind picks up, causing the ship to rock precariously in the rough sea.
A strong gust blows Hugo's hat and umbrella away as a terrifying sea monster emerges from the turbulent waves, dwarfing the sailing ship. Its long tentacles reach for Hugo, who miraculously manages to dodge them, demonstrating surprising agility. He rushes to the captain's cabin, closing the door behind him just in time. Breathing a sigh of relief for having escaped the dreadful tentacles, Hugo becomes aware of his astonishing new surroundings: he is now in a desert environment, with sand dunes as far as the eye can see.
He reopens the cabin doors, but all he sees is sand; the ship, the sea, and the scary monster are gone. The doorway stands in the middle of the desert, appearing to be a portal to a different dimension. On the side of the doorframe, Hugo notices a button labeled "Up/Down," which he presses nervously, almost as a last resort: at this point, what can he expect from a door in the middle of nowhere? For now, he is at least on solid ground, no longer at the mercy of the elements. In fact, there is a sense of serenity in this new realm.
His attention is drawn to a colorful butterfly that has just landed on his shoulder, soon followed by several others that fly around him. Hugo is in awe of the winged beauties enveloping him like a living cocoon. He takes off his glasses to wipe them, wondering if he's hallucinating. But the wondrous scene unfolding in front of him is real – in fact, he feels as if he has never seen so clearly before. He is experiencing an awakening, his senses are heightened, and his soul is lifted. Throughout his life, he has just gone through the motions, never letting his guard down or taking the time to appreciate the beauty around him. Now, a new perspective is enlightening him.
The butterflies perform fantastical choreographies around our hero, their aerial ballet interlaced with magical trails of scintillating sparks. The sound of enchanting music echoes through the air. Hugo has never felt so calm and free, as if a heavy weight had just been lifted. Standing on the tips of his toes, he even starts levitating above the sand! Suddenly, the mesmerizing scene is interrupted by the abrupt sound of an elevator bell. The magic is gone, the music stops, and the butterflies disperse.
To Hugo's surprise, the doors in the desert portal open to reveal an elevator car that responded to his call after he pushed the button. With a heavy heart, he watches the butterflies fly away, then puts his eyeglasses back on and steps into the elevator. The doors close, and the car begins to move. Our protagonist takes Claire's lost earring out of his pocket and, for a moment, observes scintillating sparks emanating from it, identical to those trailing from his winged friends as they swirled around him. The transformative event he just experienced reflects the symbolism of butterflies for rebirth and hope. It also strengthens his resolve to accomplish his mission: bringing the earring back to Claire.
The elevator stops at a new floor and as Hugo steps out, an astonishing world is revealed. He appears to be at a high altitude, with no solid ground in sight. Surrounding him are a multitude of elevator shafts going in every direction all over the sky. Elevator cars ride at a blistering speed along the steel framework of the shafts, traveling up, down, sideways, and even diagonally. Hugo stands on a small metal platform anchored to the girders of a horizontal elevator shaft. As he looks in amazement at his futuristic surroundings, he cannot help but feel a sense of vertigo at this dizzying height. One false move and it would be the end.
His gaze is interrupted by the thunderous sound of a speeding elevator and he almost loses his balance. As he struggles to steady himself, he accidentally drops the butterfly earring, which bounces on the metal platform and comes to a stop at the end of a narrow beam. Despite his fear, Hugo draws on his inner strength and proceeds hesitantly along the railing to reach the precious adornment. Walking the plank above an empty void, he demonstrates incredible bravery as he gets closer to his target with each incremental step. Just as he is about to pick up the earring, he is knocked off his perch by an elevator cabin whizzing through the very shaft he was straddling. Airborne, he barely manages to clutch a steel beam, holding on for dear life. In the process, he loses his glasses, watching them disappear into the emptiness.
Struggling to regain his footing, Hugo looks in the distance and catches a glimpse of the lift car heading back towards him at full speed! Performing impossible acrobatics, he maneuvers back to the upper beam and grabs the earring in the nick of time, narrowly escaping a plunge into the abyss. He races back to the elevator compartment and as the doors close, he repeatedly presses the "Down" button, to no avail... the mechanism appears stuck. For a moment the cabin is perfectly still, then it starts falling, faster and faster. Soon Hugo is floating in the air, incapable to stabilize himself and fearful that his enclosure will crash. On the verge of passing out, he sees the butterfly earring hovering in front of him, but he can't seem to catch it. Suddenly, the free-falling car comes to a sudden stop, and Hugo collapses to the floor as the scene fades to black.
The chime of the elevator bell breaks the silence, and Hugo comes to. As he tries to reclaim his composure, the doors open to a recognizable surrounding: the lobby of his office building. Claire enters the cabin and helps Hugo to his feet. She does a double take as he looks quite different without his hat and eyeglasses; perhaps she also senses the change in his aura, for he has returned as a transformed man. On his fantastical journey, this person of ordinary routines had a spiritual awakening and now sees the world in a more colorful light. He hands Claire her lost earring; surprised, she touches her ear, unaware that it was missing. As her hand meets his, the familiar scintillating sparkles appear. They walk away together.
